Sneha-when oil becomes care
On Ayurvedic oil massage, the making of medicated oils, and the art of attuning a treatment to a person.
In Sanskrit there is a single word for both oil and love: Sneha. The same root lives in Snehi, a loving friend. So whenever the Ayurvedic tradition speaks of oiling the body, it is also speaking of care — the language itself draws no line between the two. This is not a romantic coincidence but a precise observation. Oil on the skin does what care does for a person: it softens what has hardened, frees what has grown stiff, and reconnects what feels separate. Vasant Lad, one of the best-known teachers of Ayurveda in the West, puts it in a sentence that hangs in many treatment rooms:
Love is oily, soft, and gentle.”
